Sugar Glider Cage Set Up

sugar glider in cage

When setting up a sugar glider cage, there are a few things you will need to take into consideration. First, you will need to decide what type of cage you would like to use. There are many different types and sizes of cages on the market, so it is important to do your research before making a purchase. Second, you will need to think about what type of food and water dispensers you would like to use in your cage. Again, there are many different options available, so it is important to do your research before making a purchase. Finally, you will need to decide on the type of bedding you would like to use in your cage. Once again, there are many different types and sizes of bedding available, so it is important to do your research before making a purchase.

When setting up your sugar glider cage, it is important to remember that these animals are very active. As such, you will need to make sure that there is plenty of space for them to move around. Additionally, you will need to make sure that there are plenty of toys and playthings for them to enjoy. Sugar gliders are very curious creatures, so it is important to provide them with plenty of things to keep them occupied.

Cage Location

Keep in mind when setting up a sugar glider cage that these animals are nocturnal. As such, you will need to make sure that the cage is located in an area where there is minimal noise and not next to a window with direct sunlight. Additionally, you may want to consider investing in a nightlight for your sugar glider cage. This will help to provide them with the necessary light they need to see while they are awake and moving around at night.

Keep the room your cage is in just over 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t make the room too cold and if there is an AC exhaust right next to your cage make sure to close the outlet so cool air never will blow directly at your sugar glider cage.

Accessories and Toys

Water

You need at least two designated water areas in your cage. Clean the water dispenser daily and replace with fresh water.

Food

It is best to put the food on a plastic surface because sugar gliders are messy eaters. I recommend making them a designated feeding station (some people call it a kitchen). Please refer to my guide How to Build a Feeding Station (Kitchen) as it will help you to keep your cage clean.

Assecories

You can put a couple of fleece products in your cage, like sleeping bags, hammocks and/or pouches and maybe an additional item, but not more as sugar gliders mark their territory and it will cause an odor on a larger scale and you will find yourself constantly cleaning these items.

Climbing bars, branches, bridges and ladders are great, just make sure there are no sharp surfaces whatsoever. You can build your own climbing structure for your sugar glider with plastic rings and chains for a very low cost.

Toys

A running wheel is a must and make sure you purchase the type that is wide open on the inside, without a metal bar across the middle as it will injure your sugar glider.

It is good to change up your plastic toys by rotating them every couple of months to prevent boredom. When using some kind of closed box, container or bin, please make sure to drill some holes in it to ensure air circulation as sugar gliders really like to hide.

It is recommended to place an air purifier next to the cage to keep the air clean and prevent odor.

You are all set!! Build it with love and good luck!!
